Spring into Joy: Why Spring is Perfect for Pet Photos

Spring in Northern Michigan is a breath of fresh air—literally. After months of snow and cold, the world comes alive again—and after months of cabin fever, so do our dogs. At my house, that means one thing: chaos. Goose acts like he’s seeing squirrels, birds, and deer for the first time every single day, while Noodle’s mission in life is to steal every stick Goose finds. Add in the mud, the shedding, and the nonstop zoomies, and springtime is basically a full-time job. But it’s also one of my favorite seasons because it’s when everything comes back to life, including the joy of simply being outside with our dogs.

It’s a time of fresh starts, longer days, and—most importantly—more adventures with your pup. And that makes it the perfect season for a pet photography session.

Spring Sessions: The Sweet Spot

Spring gives us that magical in-between: the crisp air without the winter chill and the vibrant greens without the summer heat…before it gets too hot for their zoomies and it seems like their tongues are permanently stuck outside their mouths. Dogs seem to know it too—there’s an extra pep in their step, an eagerness to sniff every new scent, and an undeniable happiness that’s contagious. The natural backdrops are stunning, from blooming wildflowers to fresh, bright greenery—creating timeless images that bring warmth and joy to your home year-round.

And let’s talk about the light. Those golden-hour evenings? Absolute magic. That soft, warm glow makes every happy tail, floppy ear, and joyful leap look like something out of a dream. It’s the perfect time to capture your dog’s true spirit—their happiness, their quirks, and the love you share. Pet photography is all about showcasing what makes them them—here’s how I do it.

Making the Most of Spring (Even Without a Session!)

Not ready for a session just yet? No worries—there are still plenty of ways to enjoy the season with your pup and capture some great memories along the way:

  • Explore a new trail – The seasonal thaw means new scents and exciting discoveries for your dog. We’re so lucky to be surrounded by so many trails here in the Traverse City area, and this is one of the best times to find a new favorite! (Just be ready for a little mud!)

  • Catch golden hour – Those soft, dreamy sunsets? Perfect for a relaxed evening walk or snapping a few candid shots of your pup in the golden light. And bonus—the sun finally sets after 5pm, so you actually stand a chance of catching it!

  • Enjoy outdoor dining – Many pet-friendly patios start opening in the spring—perfect for a pup-friendly outing.

  • Try a wildflower adventure – Whether it’s a backyard bloom or a full-on field of flowers, spring is the season for beautiful natural backdrops.

The Lasting Impact: Smiles for Years to Come

Whether it’s a session or a spontaneous springtime adventure, the moments we share with our pets are fleeting. That’s why I love capturing them—not just for today, but for years down the road when you want to remember the way your dog’s tail wagged when walking at their favorite park or how their eyes lit up during another fun-filled adventure with you.

These are more than just photos—they’re everyday reminders of joy. They’re for every time you walk past that framed portrait and feel your heart swell, for the guests who take one look and say, “That is so your dog,” and for the future, when these moments become cherished memories.

Spring is coming—mud, sticks, shedding, and all. Let’s make the most of it. If you’re thinking about booking a session, now is the time to start planning! Get in touch, and let’s create something beautiful together.
