Pet Photography Myths Debunked: Why Every Pet Can Be a Star

When it comes to pet photography, there are a few common myths that might make you hesitate to book a session. You might be thinking that you’d love to have this experience with your pet, but “my dog is too reactive,” or “he’ll never sit still.”  But here’s the truth: Every pet can be a star, and I’m here to debunk those myths so you can see just how special a pet photography session can be, no matter your pet’s history, obedience level, or personality type.

Believe it or not, all of these dogs were photographed on-leash.

Myth 1: My Pet Is Too Shy/Anxious

One common concern I hear is that a pet is too shy or anxious to be photographed. You might worry that your timid cat or nervous dog won’t cooperate or that the photos won’t turn out well. But here’s the thing: Some of the most beautiful portraits I’ve captured are of pets who started out a bit camera-shy.

As your Traverse City pet photographer, I know how to create a calm, relaxed environment that helps your pet feel at ease. Whether it’s taking things slow, giving them lots of space by using a long lens, or letting your pet explore their surroundings at their own pace, I work with their comfort in mind. And often, those quiet, introspective moments result in the most soulful, intimate portraits that truly capture your pet’s personality.

Myth 2: My Pet Won’t Sit Still

Another common misconception is that a pet needs to sit still and pose perfectly to get great photos. If your dog is a bundle of energy or has a mind of their own, you might think that a photography session is out of the question. But the truth is, some of the best shots come from those spontaneous, unplanned moments.

Pets don’t need to be statuesque to look amazing in photos. Whether it’s a dog joyfully running on a Northern Michigan beach or a cat playfully pouncing in a flower-filled garden, I embrace the energy and unpredictability of your pet. Capturing those candid moments, when your pet is being their true, unfiltered self, often results in images that are full of life and character (and often my favorite images of all!).

I doubted [Amanda] could get those wiggle worms to hold still long enough to capture their personalities... Amanda outdid herself with individual portraits of each puppy plus captured the nearly impossible group shots.

Myth 3: My Dog Can’t Be Off-Leash

Worried that we won’t be able to capture photos of your dog running free off-leash? No problem! Most of the dogs I photograph are on leashes for their safety, especially in outdoor settings. With a little magic in post-processing, I can make that leash disappear, leaving you with stunning images that make it seem like your dog was frolicking freely in the great outdoors.

Even dogs that have the best recall and can be trusted off-leash often need to be on-leash in public spaces, either for their safety or due to the rules of the location. There are plenty of fantastic locations around Traverse City and the surrounding areas where we can safely use a leash without compromising on the beauty of the backdrop (thanks to our friends over at Adobe Photoshop HQ). From vibrant downtown settings to lush green parks, the options are endless—and your dog’s safety is always the priority.

Myth 4: My Dog Is Too Reactive

If your dog tends to be reactive—whether it’s barking at other dogs, having a fear of people, or simply being on high alert—you might think that a photo session would be too stressful. But even reactive dogs can have their moment in the spotlight.

I’ve worked with many reactive dogs, and I understand how to create an environment that minimizes stress and distractions. By choosing quieter (or even private) locations or scheduling sessions during less busy times, we can ensure your dog feels safe and comfortable. By being patient and letting your dog lead the way, we can capture beautiful moments that show off their unique personality without putting them in situations that might overwhelm them.

[Amanda] was accommodating and understanding of my dog’s needs. Amanda made her feel very comfortable and they were fast friends. The photos were beautiful and she captured my dog’s personality. I couldn’t love her photos more.

Every Pet Deserves Their Moment

The bottom line is that no matter your pet’s personality or quirks, I truly believe that every pet deserves to have their moment in the spotlight, and with my patience and expertise, we can make this work for your pet in a way that they’re comfortable and they have fun too! Whether they’re shy, energetic, reactive, or leash-bound, every pet can shine in their own way.

So, if one of these myths has been holding you back from booking a session for your pet, I encourage you to take the leap! Let’s work together to create beautiful, lasting memories of your pet—exactly as they are.
